PWI Weekly for June 17, 2024
Sabor De Lucha: Mistico, Vampiro & AAA Vets, Lucha Boom Results, & More
ALTHOUGH THIS EDITION of the PWI Weekly was put together ahead of last weekend’s huge Triplemania XXII: Tijuana show, we’ve found ourselves chatting a lot about lucha libre in the office as of late. With that in mind, we thought we’d infuse this edition of the Weekly with a little sabor de lucha.
WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

With appearances in AEW and MLW already on his CV, it continues to be a big year for CMLL’s Mistico who, in 2024, is celebrating 20 years of the famous character.
Born Luis Ignacio Urive Alvirde, the second generation star first donned the mask of Mistico in the mid-2000s and helped usher in a time of record-breaking business for CMLL. Ultimately, he would draw the attention of WWE, which signed the luchador in 2011 and repackaged him as Sin Cara. To say that his time there was disappointing for all involved would be kind.
Ultimately, Alvirde was released from his contract—and the mask of Sin Cara was given to someone else to wear. Back in his native Mexico, a similar situation was already happening, as the Mistico moniker had moved on to another grappler.
After several name changes, Alvirde would finally return to his most successful persona, after the previous man under the hood (Dralistico) departed for AAA and AEW. Since then, he has regained his status as a Mexican megastar and is now regarded as a lucha legend. Congrats on your anniversary Mistico, and here’s to 20 more.
A QUICK WORD ABOUT…
While Mistico is busy becoming a legend in CMLL, over in AAA, some bona fide legends have been at the forefront of a resurgence in that promotion. At the front of that pack is Vampiro, who is in the midst of what he is calling his retirement tour.
For a time in the 1990s, the Canadian was a legitimate household name in Mexico, gracing the covers of celebrity magazines and appearing in daytime soap operas. It seems that Vampiro still has his legions of fans. And many have turned out to say farewell to him, boosting AAA’s business in the process.
With big-time tag team matches under his belt at Triplemania shows in Monterrey and Tijuana, the 57-year old has shown he hasn’t lost the fire or charisma that made him so revered across the nation.

FROM THE VAULT
In the above photo, taken during the main event of Triplemania Tijuana, July 2023, Kenny Omega wears down AAA Mega champion El Hijo Del Vikingo with a modified camel clutch. Although Vikingo would retain his title that night, the Puebla, Mexico, native’s high-risk ring style later caught up to him—leading Vikingo to vacate the Mega campeonato in early-February of this year. By that, Omega was already sidelined by diverticulitis. Thankfully, both men have taken steps to address their respective ailments … and, on a more selfish note, we hope we haven’t seen the last of their thrilling in-ring rivalry.
Correction! that would be...Triplemania XXXII!
I didn't catch it yet...we did watch Clash at the Castle however...Cody has totally won our household over!
Thank you for the coverage of the Lucha Boom show in Detroit...Great photos Jerry!!
