PWI Weekly for March 30, 2026
International Incidents: The Latest Happenings In Global Wrestling
WELCOME TO ANOTHER EDITION of the PWI Weekly.
In the latest deliberate break from our typically U.S.-centric coverage, this edition is dedicated to the men and women who have recently been making their mark in the wider world of wrestling. From Japan to Europe and Mexico, we see a wealth of talented athletes finding success around the globe. Here are a few who have us talking at the moment …
WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
On March 21, Callum Newman singled himself out as a big-time player in New Japan Pro-Wrestling by winning the New Japan Cup. The 23-year-old became the youngest-ever winner—shattering the record set by Kazuchika Okada in 2013—when he defeated Yuya Uemura in the tournament final. Despite entering the round nursing a neck injury (and after surviving Shota Umino in a brutal semifinal match), Newman was able to outlast Uemura and lift the trophy.
The victory serves as a coming-of-age moment for Newman, who now has his sights set on dethroning Yota Tsuji for the IWGP heavyweight championship at Sakura Genesis on April 4.
SPOTLIGHT ON …
As March closes out, so, too, does another month where Flammer maintains her status as one of the most dominant women in lucha libre history. Since dethroning Taya Valkyrie on August 12, 2023, the Reina de Reinas champion has embarked on a record-breaking journey that now stands as the longest reign in the title’s 27-year history. Most recently, at Rey de Reyes, Flammer successfully defended her crown against Bayley in a high-profile cross-promotional matchup.
While she might rely on assistance from her Las Toxicas stablemates a tad too much for our liking, that doesn’t negate Flammer’s accomplishment. With a title reign approaching 1000 days, this ultra-tough luchadora has been a spectacular constant in the ever-evolving landscape of Lucha Libre AAA.
A QUICK WORD ABOUT …
We’d be remiss if we didn’t give props to the winner of this year’s 16 Carat Gold tournament, Ahura. The German grappler overcame Thomas Shire, Tetsuya Naito, and Dennis Dullnig in tourney matches before besting Peter Tihanyi in a high-stakes final. Perhaps unfairly viewed as “a tag team wrestler” for much of his career, Ahura has now cemented his status as his own man. Don’t be surprised if a wXw Unified title reign is in his immediate future.
THAT’S GOTTA HURT!
We aren’t sure what Session Moth Martina did here to make Rhio so mad, but it sure looks like the Dublin lass paid the price for it with pain. Still, it would be Martina who would have the last laugh in their main-event match at Pro Wrestling: EVE’s well-received Wrestle Queendom event earlier this month. Martina dethroned Rhio to become the new EVE champion—her first reign with the prestigious prize.
TERRITORIAL DISSINGS
We can’t really call this a promo in the strictest sense, but it still deserves to be seen. If you’re unfamiliar with either Leatherface or Japanese hardcore promotion FMW, well … here you go.
